Page 25 Page 26 10— Relationships between Golgi Apparatus, Endoplasmic Reticulum and Nuclear Envelope Introduction: Functional relationships between the ER (including the nuclear envelope) and the Golgi apparatus are especially evident in certain algal cells, where the two systems enter into consistent Positional relationships. Micrographs of these cells are therefore illustrated here to aid understanding of the combined operations of the ER - Golgi continuum. The same functional relationship between the ER (but not the nuclear envelope) and Golgi apparatus recurs in higher plants, though the positional relationships are much less obvious.

It can be seen that after a period of transcription, each projecting RNA strand starts to fold and interact with granular material, seen as terminal knobs. This is interpreted as the first stage of association of pre-ribosomal RNA with ribosomal proteins. There are in fact two size classes of large RNA molecule in each ribosome, plus two much smaller RNA molecules, and about 80 different proteins, all arranged in one large and one smaller ribosomal subunit. The total assembly process is therefore very complex.

These are formed at the margins of cisternae at the trans-face of the Golgi stacks. As shown in the inset at top right, their bounding characteristics and dimensions as seen in the plasma membrane, with which they fuse to release their contents to the exterior. As with PLate 9, it is not possible to discriminate between the cis-, medial- and trans- Golgi compartments within the stacks. However, the very numerous coated vesicles at the margins of the cisternae (distinct from the larger vesicles (V) that contain the secretory product) must represent the vesicles that shuttle intermediates and membranes between the successive compartments.
