Sadly, however, he was born into the wrong people – a people engaged in mutual slaughter, which squanders its best talent; a people that makes it necessary for a young man like Gungwu to go to England to attend some stuffy “sinological conference” with a bunch of old men and women academics – it troubles me to picture Gungwu’s rare talent in such circumstances; a people that is incapable of employing talent on behalf of the nation – but it is too late for regrets and lamentations. A second meeting in Beijing After the Oxford meeting, I heard that Gungwu had moved from Singapore to Australia – he was still working at university, doing sinology and Chinese history (which were anyway second nature to him).

There was not one of the ladies and gentlemen present at the conference whose particulars my “catalogue” did not embrace, so as a “lecturer in catalogue studies” I was ideally qualified to make a fair assessment of the attainments of each and every one of them. Only a handful of talented budding young scholars escaped my prior attention. Most budding of all the young people in attendance was Gungwu, to whom I naturally paid exceptional attention. When I discovered that he was, like me, an alumnus of Central University, my feelings of warmth and curiosity naturally intensified.

Instead of going with the stream, Gungwu should boldly and resolutely seize the opportunity to produce in the 10 years available a modern university for China that truly matched up to international standards, and thus light the touch-paper for the comprehensive reform of China’s system of higher education. He had the training, the vision, the resolve, and the opportunity to bring about the modernization of Chinese university education, truly a heavy duty with which Heaven had entrusted him! It seemed to me that in the course of its 20 years’ rule (excluding the Cultural Revolution) the Chinese Communist Party had still not succeeded in establishing a “mainstream” in its universities.
