If the setting was all there was, it might indeed be taken for a barrier, because it would only be a negative aspect of the process of differentiation and not part of the search for communication. The statement ‘I am eager to distinguish myself from you’ would be presented without its justification: ‘because that is essential if we are to communicate’. ’ Combining setting and interpretation In analysis, the setting ensuring the separation of analyst and analysand is combined with the work of interpretation by which analyst and patient can confront their limits.

During psychoanalysis, growing awareness does not follow a progressive chronology: highly evolved mechanisms can be discovered by the analysand before as well as after more regressive psychic mechanisms, or indeed at the same time. In any case, an act of awareness does not simply extend the list of previous acts of awareness; it modifies the entire psyche whose every component it changes; hence an analysand’s discovery of how his vertigo relates to his oedipal conflicts may enable him to realize that he sometimes presents a form of vertigo involving the most regressive mechanisms.

Nevertheless, if Luc used this way of speaking with me, in the same way as his other manifestations of anxiety, it was surely so that, in the analysis, we could assign some meaning to it and work it over. References to castration that actually lead back to a more regressive anxiety Despite its apparent incoherence, Luc’s discourse during that phase of the analysis enabled me to get slightly closer to the contents of the phantasies connected with the physical sensations he expressed. Luc, his eyes shut, saw very garish and unconnected images which he listed: necks of disembodied chickens, cut-up rabbits, broken motor-car spanners…These images, which had no meaning for Luc, suggested castration anxiety to me.
