Determination of the length of baseline measurement is an essential component of single-subject design construction. Typically, baseline measurement continues until a stable behavior pattern is observed (Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1968). However, in clinical practice, ethical and logistical issues may preclude continuing the baseline until a stable pattern is established. Generally, a minimum of three separate baseline points is mandated (Barlow & Hersen, 1973). The simplest of all single-subject designs is the A-B design.

The multiplebaseline design and the alternating treatment design are the two most commonly used single-subject designs that do not involve treatment removal. The multiple-baseline design requires identification of several behaviors that can be measured over time. Treatment is applied to each behavior sequentially, while the remaining behaviors are simply measured (ongoing baseline measurement). If improvement is noted in each behavior following initiation of the treatment while nontreated behaviors remain at baseline rates, one can conclude that the treatment has been effective in creating behavioral change.

Ambiguity in meaning leads to lack of agreement between observers and should be avoided. The definition should make it clear as to what behaviors are to be included or excluded. Completeness suggests that the definition be broad enough to cover possible variations of the behavior so that observers can determine whether certain behavioral variations should be included or excluded. FREQUENCY RECORDING Frequency recording, which is essentially a running count of the occurrence of the target behavior(s), is the most easily understood and perhaps most widely used method for directly assessing behavior.
