Every medical school produces competent doctors, and going to a ’better‘ medical school will not affect your future career prospects. Therefore, in this author’s opinion (ie someone who has just completed their medical degree), the location of the university is very important. You will spend five or six years at the university so you want to like the city you are living in. Town or country? There are no medical schools in the countryside but there are some in smaller cities, or on the outskirts of cities rather than in the centre.

Reputation is built on other things too, such as academic research and famous alumni. Medical schools with a ’better‘ reputation do not necessarily produce better doctors, so do not put too much emphasis on it. Some British universities have names that are recognised across the world. If you can say on your CV that you have an Oxford or Cambridge degree, you may well have an advantage when it comes to jobs. Universities with good academic or clinical reputations may also give better opportunities to their students – they are often connected to high quality research centres, so if you feel that you want to delve deeper into a particular field, you will be in the perfect place to do it.

Your lectures are likely to begin in Freshers’ Week so don’t expect a gentle start. • Get involved with activities outside the course; they will keep you sane even in the midst of exams. • If you do need help, ask for it; it is always available.
