If you initially bring the ball to the area you intend to attack, you may see overplay or denial defense. However, by quickly changing direction and taking the ball opposite to the weak side you can catch the defense before it reacts for the overplay. Combine the same dribbling device with quick player movement from one side of the court to the other and you'll receive a second benefit: two-on-one, three-on-two, and four-on-three overload situations. Once you're into your zone attack you'll see openings for the dribble-drive.
If an offense shows a 1-3-1 attack, the defense immediately reacts and shows a 1-3-1 zone to match up with the five offensive players. If the offense shows a 2-1-2 set, the defense immediately reacts and deploys in what looks like a 2-1-2 zone. The key in attacking a match-up is to use offensive players one-on-one with and without the ball. When a player cuts from one side of the court to the other, the defensive players must "pass off" the offensive player to a defender in another area of the court.
If the offense becomes stagnant, it plays right into the hands of the match-up zone. Very few players will find open areas or gaps for shots. So to be successful against a match-up, you need cutting, flashing, and screening. This makes it difficult for the zone to adjust to both player and ball movement. Since a match-up is so similar to man-to-man, you can create one-on-one opportunities facing the basket or you can create post-up situations for one-on-one play inside. You can treat a match-up somewhat like a man-to-man defense.
