Acknowledgments Most of the people who have helped me out during the 11 years I have worked on this book (and have stepped away from it for long intervals while working with the subject plants to gain experience) have been named in the text. But several others remain to be introduced: Phyllis Anderson, a colleague in garden writing and garden design, supplied a report on the Hagopian moss carpet in Stockton, California. Richard Brown, who manages the Bloedel Reserve, Bainbridge Island, Washington, provided the extraordinary recipe of the making of the moss Page 11 garden there, in which one of the steps on the way to success was an induced failure.

I know of two moss gardens, American in location and in character, that employ mosses in ways quite as distinctive as anything one might see in Kyoto. These are the gardens at Doe Run, a private estate open to garden groups by appointment, and at the Bloedel Reserve, formerly a private garden but now open to both groups and individuals. Doe Run, in Unionville, Pennsylvania, is the address of the world's first moss house. The Bloedel Reserve, on Bainbridge Island in Washington state, embraces a woods carpeted with moss and decorated with mossy logs and stumps.

The moss is there because it is probably better suited to the location than is any other ground-covering plant, and will ask only a little help from the gardenerpossibly less than anything that you might plantin order to make of itself a permanent, luxuriant, grass-free carpet. This certainly works in some places, as I will show. Here and now I had better broaden my reply to the question of the practicality of moss gardening. The whole truth is, there is no saving of garden work in the growing of mosses that do not occur naturally in the garden.
