Why would people even think about teaching mindfulness without a regular practice? Because it seems to be so deceivingly simple. Don’t be tricked by this apparent simplicity. Mindfulness teacher Sharon Salzberg traveled to India on a quest for special instructions to learn the secrets of deep peace and happiness (yes, it was the 1960s after all). When her teacher gave her instructions for a breathing meditation, she thought: “What? I came all the way to India to focus on my breath? ” Whenever she tells this story during a workshop, she laughs.

We start by trusting the body with practices such as Mindfulness of Breathing or the Body Scan (see Session 1). As we start to pay close attention to our body, we become aware that we can trust it to breathe by itself, to digest, to move, to heal, and so on. Often, we only start paying attention to a body part or a function of the body when its function is impaired. Mindfulness practice changes that. We can deliberately pay attention to all that does work well (miraculously well), and we can learn to appreciate it while learning about trust.

The important point for a skilled mindfulness facilitator is to understand enough of the science to skillfully answer questions and integrate material as needed into the class to inspire students. But be cautious about creating an expectation of transformation or “getting rid” of unpleasant symptoms or experiences.
